Police say the Phish crowd was 'so pleasant to deal with'- article by Sally Pollack, Free Press Staff

"The weather was fine, the crowd was pleasant. The traffic didn’t jam, the band did.

The flood recovery benefit concert performed by Phish on Wednesday night at the Essex Junction Expo was a smooth-running affair, according to police.

“It ran extremely well,” said Brad LaRose, acting chief of the Essex Police Department. “I was very pleased and very appreciative for the cooperation of the crowd. They were very pleasant to deal with. I’ve been in the business for 33 years, and I can’t ever remember dealing with a crowd of that size that was so pleasant to deal with.”

The police made no arrests at Phish’s first Vermont concert in seven years, according to LaRose. Five people — of an estimated crowd of 13,000 — were taken into protective custody because of excessive alcohol or drug use, LaRose said. An additional three people were released to someone who could take care of them, he said.

“We wanted to keep everybody safe,” LaRose said.

The concert venue capacity is 12,000, and the show sold out. But public officials chose to let people without tickets into the expo’s parking area, where they could listen to the show from a hillside, LaRose said.

“From a public safety standpoint, it was manageable,” LaRose said. “They were well behaved.”

The police confiscated 16 tanks of nitrous oxide, according to the department.

LaRose thought the show ran so well, and the crowd was so respectful, because everyone was aware of the purpose of the event: raising money to help Vermonters recover and rebuild from last month’s severe flooding.

Even with a bit of a backed-up traffic at rush hour, “these folks had roads to drive on,” LaRose said."

Please Note: Tickets to the

Phish Benefit Concert

are sold out.

With a capacity crowd expected at the September 14 Flood Relief benefit concert by Phish, concertgoers should be aware of some guidelines for the evening:

• The concert is rain or shine. No umbrellas allowed.

• Carpooling is recommended. Concertgoers are encouraged to minimize vehicle use and come early (the grounds open at 2 pm;
  see below) with friends, or use public transportation.

• Gate B (Route 15) and Gate E (on Route 2A) will open for vehicle traffic at 2 pm.

• The Pearl Street Gatehouse on Route 15 will open for pedestrian access at 5:30 pm.

• Ticket gates open at 5:30 pm. Everyone who enters the grounds must have a ticket.

• There will be NO re-entry. Everyone must have a ticket to remain on CVE grounds during the concert.

• There is General Admission seating for the track and Grandstand areas. No chairs or blankets permitted in the GA track area.

• No alcohol or glass bottles will be allowed. Food and beverages will be sold in secure facilities on the grounds.

• Only amateur cameras will be allowed (no detachable lenses.)

• The show begins at 7 pm and will end promptly by 11 pm.

On September 12, I wrote a blog post titled "Here For Phish? How About You Lend a Phreaking Hand?" In retrospect, I realize that it was ill-timed and ill-conceived. A number of readers felt the post impugned the good work already being done by flood volunteers, took for granted Phish's contribution to the relief efforts, and was offensive to a legion of music fans.

This was not my intent. I simply meant to draw attention to a need facing our state in the wake of a natural disaster and, at the same time, poke a little fun at the caricature of the Phish fan that has formed over the years. And, yes, I realize there is more than one kind of Phish fan.

I, like my fellow Vermonters, appreciate the work that is being done around the state to help get people back on their feet after Tropical Storm Irene. Phish is being incredibly generous by donating their time and talent. The money that is raised from their benefit show on September 14 will go a long way toward helping the state heal. I didn't intend to minimize their contribution, or those of concertgoers from in and out of state.

Judging from the negative reactions to the blog post, I clearly didn't achieve what I set out to with the piece: to entertain and inform. As some have already pointed out, this piece was a "phail." I acknowledge that, and I'm sorry.

Got linked to this sweet blog today. I assume the comments are still blowing up. Peeps seem pretty sensitive. I'll leave it to others to editorialize about the tone of said blog, but here's an excerpt with some useful links that could use more exposure either way...

— You could phill your camper van with personal hygiene products, phirst aid items, cleaning and school supplies and food and take it to South Royalton. For a full list of this community's needs, click here.

— How about taking down some walls and pulling up some flooring for the Kadrik family in Waterbury?

— Perhaps you could help muck out the Hancock Town Hall basement.

— Maybe you could help phix the phence at Turner Farm on Route 100 in the Mad River Valley.

There are many more projects that you could help with. Your best bet to phind volunteer opportunities is VTResponse. If you are willing and able, they will gladly set you up with something to do. Not able to swing a hammer, carry a bucket or throw things in a dumpster? Remember to earmark your contribution for flood relief."

In order to ensure that a large allotment of tickets is available to local residents, the public onsale will be in-person only. Phish will play a special show at the Champlain Valley fairgrounds in Essex Junction next Wednesday, Sept. 14. The concert will benefit Vermont flood recovery efforts.

Phish keyboardist Page McConnell appeared LIVE on the Channel 3 News at 6 p.m. to talk about the show.

"It's been devastating to see everything that's happened and we're just honored that there's something we can do hopefully to help out," he said.

McConnell said the band's manager called them last week and said we want to do this benefit. McConnell said of course, they all said yes. They've been working out the details ever since.

This will be the band's first concert in Vermont since 2004.

"We think this is a really nice way for us to come back and give back to the state that's given us so much," McConnell said.

General admission tickets will be $75. Doors open at 5:30 p.m. and the concert will begin at 7 p.m.

Proceeds from the concert and merchandise sales will be directed to The WaterWheel Foundation and The Vermont Community Foundation to aid in the recovery of the Green Mountain State.

"What we're hoping to do is give 100 percent of ticket money to the benefit, so it will benefit the people. These concerts are very expensive to put on, so we've been able to get vendors and people that are involved with it to do this either for a reduced price or for nothing. We're looking to have other people help underwrite it. Our manager, Coran Capshaw, manages a number of other bands; Dave Matthews said that he was going to contribute to it. So if we can get people to cover the expenses of putting on the concert, then we will be able to give 100 percent of it to the relief fund," McConnell explained.

Sidenote: A 27-year-old Georgia man was found dead in the Dick’s campsite Sunday morning, slumped in a chair. While police haven’t determined a cause of death, it’s very likely a drug overdose. Police combed the campsite all day Sunday searching for a name of the man or anyone who knew him. With Phish’s bandleader Trey Anastasio now a 12-stepper and vocal cheerleader for the national Drug Court system, it seems only a matter of time before he steps up to the mic to address the rampant and escalating drug abuse at his shows. Just like any concert, the drugs range from doobies to dangerous and I’ll bet the kid who died was dabbling in opiates, which seem to be making a resurgence on the Phish scene, with hairy, dazed dudes peddling Oxycontin pills in the parking lot. It’s a shame that such a tremendous stand was marred with a death, but hopefully it can jolt some awareness into the parking lot kids who so rabidly pursue ridiculous levels of inebriation. Hopefully, but not likely.
